Gas, electric, water, sewer and communication lines run beneath almost every property in the Sacramento region. Striking one during demolition or excavation can hurt people and cause long outages. USA North 811, the Underground Service Alert center for Northern California and Nevada, is the free service that notifies member utilities so they can mark the approximate location of their buried lines before digging begins.

When to contact them

California law requires excavators to notify the regional center before most digging. That includes breaking out foundations, removing slabs over buried lines, trenching and grading below the surface. The law sets notice windows and response times, so check the current rules and submit your request ahead of your planned start date.

What a locate covers

  • Member utilities are marked: Participating utilities mark the approximate path of their lines using paint or flags in a standard color code.
  • Marks are approximate: The law generally calls for extra care near marks, such as hand-digging inside a set tolerance zone.
  • Private lines may be missed: Owner-installed lines, such as some irrigation, lighting or private service laterals, may not be marked by member utilities. Ask your contractor how those will be found.

An 811 ticket does not shut off service

A locate tells you where buried lines run. It does not disconnect the building you are demolishing. Electric, gas, water and sewer service to the structure must be shut off and capped through the individual providers, which can take time. Many demolition delays come from starting those requests late.

A short checklist

  • Request the locate well before excavation.
  • Arrange building service disconnects separately.
  • Keep marks visible and re-request if they fade or the job slips.
  • Walk the site with your contractor and discuss private lines.
